In honour of my nephew’s first birthday a little while ago, I have written, illustrated and designed a children’s book starring him (as a hedgehog). I have always wanted to take a shot at writing and designing children’s books, and with online print-on-demand sites such as Lulu, my attempts can now come as close as possible to actual publication. Exciting!
This first installment in the Elias the Hedgehog series gives a glimpse into my little nephew’s life at this moment. His world is made up of a very small group of key people, his family; their lives in turn revolve around him. He happens to be exceptional at giving hugs, which he delivers with the kind of innocent and unashamed abandon that only a child can master. I want to remember him at this moment, and I want him to be able to look back and see himself as we did on that day. Happy Birthday, Elias.
Lindsay! this is awesome – what a treat to be able to share your talents with such a professional outlet!! And i’m thrilled that you still go by goob…(er pile apple dumpling!)
This is AMAZING! You are such a talented lady. I am sure Elias will treasure this book for years to come. I love how each of your family members personalities comes through by what they suggest for him for his birthday present. If you decide to publish this professionally (which I think you should), I would love a copy for my kids and for my classroom. Please wish MINI a belated HAPPY birthday for me and give him a big bear- (or hedgehog-) HUG on my behalf.
xo
Love it!! The digital version looks pretty amazing as well. Definitely definitely go down this route with publishing this book, making it into a tablet app, and making more personalised books. You are gonna be HUGE! 🙂
This is a wonderful little book you’ve created. It has nice, cute, friendly-looking and simple pictures, is non-judgemental, is not trying to brainwash poor little children into a particular mindset, is visually stimulating and I love your clever font choices and layout. It was fun to read which makes it enjoyable for the reader and not just the listener. With many books that my kids, and now grandkids, have asked me to read to them I give a little inward groan and think “oh, not that one…I hate reading that book”. So you’ve hit it exactly spot-on. I wish I had your talent.
Thanks Mel!
Thank-you so much for your support, and kind words!
Goob, the book turned out GREAT! You keep amazing all of us with your talents. One of my favourite parts was seeing the “S.S. mini” on the side of the sailboat! So cute! Get it published so I can buy it for my classroom!
Goob! How amazing is this??! Love love love it. Great work!
Lindsay, I’m in awe! You are amazingly talented! Your warm and gentle story and whimsical illustrations are just wonderful and you captured the world of a young child so sweetly. I hope you do publish – it would be an immediate favourite.

Saw this posted on reddit.com and think it’s absolutely adorable! I’ll always be a kid at heart. I can’t imagine how special your son will feel when he’s old enough to understand that there is book written for, and about, him because of how much you love him. So precious! 😀
This is adorable. Hopefully it reaches a wider readership!
Lindsay, this is so adorable. What a lucky little guy your nephew is!
